Welcome to The Newman Center, students!

Whether prospective or incoming, we are thrilled to have you.

We are honored to be among the first to welcome you to University at Buffalo! We hope that this page about opportunities to participate in your faith life during college will either inspire you to come to UB, or excite you about the years that await you in Buffalo.

College is full of new experiences -- some exciting, some difficult -- and both faith in God and a supportive faith community can help ease the transition. We here at the Newman Center feel privileged for the opportunity to walk alongside you during your time at UB and share with you in prayer, fellowship and other activities.

The Newman Center, Catholic Campus Ministry at UB, often acts as a "home away from home" for students. We offer a warm, welcoming environment for prayer and faith, as well as a dynamic community that relishes in sharing time and energy with one another. We strive to:

  • Help clarify values in a time of exploration
  • Build a sense of Catholic identity and understanding through education, reflection and discussion
  • Form leaders in the world and for the Church through service and empowerment

And do all of this in the context of faith, through a vibrant spiritual center.

Take a look at the information below. See what interests you! You will find many opportunities for group and individual faith-sharing, retreats, investigation into Catholicism, service and prayer. Please don't hesitate to contact a staff member for more information.

At Newman, "it's all about the students." We truly look forward to having you join us.

In Christ the Teacher,
Msgr. J. Patrick Keleher
Director

Road Trip to Our Lady of Victory Basilica

Take a pilgrimage to Our Lady of Victory Basilica in Lackawanna, NY, the home of Father Baker

Thursday, October 9, 2008
11:15 am Depart from the Bookstore Parking Lot on the North Campus
12:10 pm Mass at the Basilica
1:00 pm Tour of the Basilica
3:30 pm Arrive back to campus

Please sign up to go with Greg by October 6 at 636-7495 or gcoogan@buffalo.edu

Today, the Basilica continues to draw close to 2,000 visitors every month. Pilgrims and well-wishers of all faiths from every state gather to offer prayers to Father Baker, enjoy a calm moment of reflection, or just to admire the breath-taking architecture. The future will no doubt hold even more promise, as Father Baker advances down the long Path to Sainthood. Beatification (the next step and the second of three in the process), would, in itself, cause attendance to jump, while canonization is expected to bring tens of thousands of visitors to Lackawanna and its wondrous shrine.

Simply stated, the OLV Basilica is what it is: a shrine of unparalleled beauty, a place for all to dream, hope and believe in. But it is also this: a gift offered by a humble servant to a provider of great things, the Blessed Mother. It is, and ever will be, a symbol of Father Baker's steadying faith and a dream that was very much worth dreaming.

Mass of the Holy Spirit

Celebrate Spirit!, the official welcome to the new school year for UB faculty, staff and students, is part of a long tradition dating from the founding of the great European universities in the Middle Ages. These institutions would celebrate the Mass of the Holy Spirit at the start of a new school year. Following this tradition we call on God's Spirit for inspiration as we begin a new academic year. This festive event gathers the entire University community together to rededicate ourselves to the University's mission, to renew friendships, and to welcome new members.

The annual Mass of the Holy Spirit and Convocation will be celebrated on Sunday, September 28 at 11:30 am. The liturgy will be held at St. Joseph University Church located at 3269 Main Street in Buffalo. The church is adjacent to the South Campus. Faculty, staff, administration and students are highly encouraged to join in the procession before Mass. The procession gathers at 11 am in the Community Room to robe and form the procession.

A reception, open to the entire community, will be held immediately after the service in St. Joseph University School cafeteria.
