Welcome to The Newman Center, students!
Whether prospective or incoming, we are thrilled to have you.
We are honored to be among the first to welcome you to University at Buffalo! We hope that this page about opportunities to participate in your faith life during college will either inspire you to come to UB, or excite you about the years that await you in Buffalo.
College is full of new experiences -- some exciting, some difficult -- and both faith in God and a supportive faith community can help ease the transition. We here at the Newman Center feel privileged for the opportunity to walk alongside you during your time at UB and share with you in prayer, fellowship and other activities.
The Newman Center, Catholic Campus Ministry at UB, often acts as a "home away from home" for students. We offer a warm, welcoming environment for prayer and faith, as well as a dynamic community that relishes in sharing time and energy with one another. We strive to:
- Help clarify values in a time of exploration
- Build a sense of Catholic identity and understanding through education, reflection and discussion
- Form leaders in the world and for the Church through service and empowerment
And do all of this in the context of faith, through a vibrant spiritual center.
Take a look at the information below. See what interests you! You will find many opportunities for group and individual faith-sharing, retreats, investigation into Catholicism, service and prayer. Please don't hesitate to contact a staff member for more information.
At Newman, "it's all about the students." We truly look forward to having you join us.
In Christ the Teacher,
Msgr. J. Patrick Keleher

Road Trip to Our Lady of Victory Basilica
Take a pilgrimage to Our Lady of Victory Basilica in Lackawanna, NY, the home of Father Baker
Thursday, October 9, 2008
11:15 am Depart from the Bookstore Parking Lot on the North Campus
12:10 pm Mass at the Basilica
1:00 pm Tour of the Basilica
3:30 pm Arrive back to campus
Please sign up to go with Greg by October 6 at 636-7495 or gcoogan@buffalo.edu
Today, the Basilica continues to draw close to 2,000 visitors every month. Pilgrims and well-wishers of all faiths from every state gather to offer prayers to Father Baker, enjoy a calm moment of reflection, or just to admire the breath-taking architecture. The future will no doubt hold even more promise, as Father Baker advances down the long Path to Sainthood. Beatification (the next step and the second of three in the process), would, in itself, cause attendance to jump, while canonization is expected to bring tens of thousands of visitors to Lackawanna and its wondrous shrine.
Simply stated, the OLV Basilica is what it is: a shrine of unparalleled beauty, a place for all to dream, hope and believe in. But it is also this: a gift offered by a humble servant to a provider of great things, the Blessed Mother. It is, and ever will be, a symbol of Father Baker's steadying faith and a dream that was very much worth dreaming.

Alternative Spring Break 2009: TBA
ASB is a week-long service project in the United States during Spring Break. The group travels to needy areas of US. During the week of service, the work assignments will vary depending on the site location and what is available in the area. In the past, students have worked in soup kitchens, shelters, social agencies and retirement centers. We also have had the opportunity to rebuild homes, paint, and assist youth with the home-work in after-school centers.
Through the various acts of service that we participate in, we start to build bridges of understanding. We confront some of the issues of poverty, race and class that divide us.
Our Mission is to do Service for others, grow in Spirituality and share in Community with others.
SERVICE: Students experience that "hands on" work of service projects and they grow in understanding the Gospel values of "giving of oneself."
SPIRITUALITY: Students share prayer and fellowship as they reflect daily on their experiences of ministry. Many have found that through service to others
COMMUNITY: Students, during the trip, form a small Christian community. Community offers students opportunities to eat, pray, and live together. Participants recognize they are truly part of the large human community. Many realize that they are changed forever as their lives become intertwined with those they are privileged to serve.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Where is the ASB Trip going this year?
The Newman Center Alternative Spring Break Experience will be announced soon.
- What do these trips do?
All ASB trips provide students with the opportunity to explore issues and experiences they cannot find on the university setting. Past ASB trips have volunteered in soup kitchens, cleared cemeteries, repaired trails, constructed fences, tutored children and most importantly, built relationships with those whom they are helping.
- What is the mission of the ASB program?
The Three Pillars of the ASB Trip are to do SERVICE for others, grow in SPIRITUALITY and share in COMMUNITY with others. The campus minister and student team work hard to incorporate these three elements into the group meetings, retreat day and the trip itself through learning activities and example.
- What is the cost of the trip?
Each student is responsible for paying $150 indivdually, which covers meals, lodging, and travel to and from the place of service. The initial deposit of $25 and the registration form are due to the Newman Center office by Wednesday, January 28, 2009. Students can bring spending money for souveniers and will need some money for their day off.
- What if I can't afford to go on the trip?
The ASB program would never turn someone away due to finances. For that reason, generous benefactors of the Newman Center have created scholarship funds to make this experience possible. The first step in the scholarship process is to talk with Kristin Casey (kmcasey@buffalo.edu) or Greg Coogan (gcoogan@buffalo.edu) or call at 716-636-7495.
- As a participant, what would be required of me?
Each student participant is responsible for their level of participation on the ASB Trip and the events leading up to the experience. Participation includes group meetings and the ASB day retreat. AS a member of the ASB community, communication is an important component! Therefore regular checking and resonding of email is key to keeping open the lines of communication.
- Why are these trips "alternative"?
Newman Center "alternative" trips focus participants on one of the trips key components of spirituality. We do service because of the Gospel message found in Matthew 25: 35-26 and this helps participants to see their work as Christ's work. These trips are also drug and alcohol free, offering students an alternative to the more "traditional" spring break. This experience allows students to be immersed in environments that enable them to interact with diverse communities and understand social issues.
- How will we get there?
All trips travel in mini-vans rented from a local renal delearship, Enterprise. Participants over 21 with good driving records may be asked to drive, but no one is forced.
- What do we eat and where do we sleep?
Most accomodations are provided by the host site or determined by the trip leaders. Past trips have stayed in church halls, community buildings or in the actual service organization center. Food is also determined by each trip. Some sites provide meals, either for free or for a low-cost. Other trips have to buy and prepare all of their meals.
- How many people will go on a trip?
The ASB experience consists of a campus minister, student team members and a range of 12- 25 participants.
- How can I sign up?
Sign ups are on a first-come-first serv basis. You can only sign up for yourself. This is a chance to meet other people and expand your horizons. A $25 non-refundable deposit is due with your registration.
- Do you have a waiting list?
Deposits are not required to be put on a waiting list, which is also on a first-come-first-serve basis. UB students are encouaged to participate.

Mass of the Holy Spirit
Celebrate Spirit!, the official welcome to the new school year for UB faculty, staff and students, is part of a long tradition dating from the founding of the great European universities in the Middle Ages. These institutions would celebrate the Mass of the Holy Spirit at the start of a new school year. Following this tradition we call on God's Spirit for inspiration as we begin a new academic year. This festive event gathers the entire University community together to rededicate ourselves to the University's mission, to renew friendships, and to welcome new members.
The annual Mass of the Holy Spirit and Convocation will be celebrated on Sunday, September 28 at 11:30 am. The liturgy will be held at St. Joseph University Church located at 3269 Main Street in Buffalo. The church is adjacent to the South Campus. Faculty, staff, administration and students are highly encouraged to join in the procession before Mass. The procession gathers at 11 am in the Community Room to robe and form the procession.
A reception, open to the entire community, will be held immediately after the service in St. Joseph University School cafeteria.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Do you know that my Catholic student is at the University at Buffalo?
Not necessarily. UB is a public institution. They never ask any sort of religious question in the process of applying or registering. So the Newman Community has no way of knowing which of UB’s 27,200 students are Catholics. YOU COULD HELP US BY DROPPING ME AN E-MAIL WITH YOUR NAME, & YOUR STUDENT’S NAME. Otherwise, we collect student names the way most parishes do. We have a general registration at Masses on the first few Sundays of the school year.
